Q. How long does the tail hair need to be?
A. We need at least 20 inches for an average sized bracelet. (Average being 7 inches.)
Q . How much tail hair do I need?
A. About the diameter of your pointer finger. The more, the better. You would be very surprised at how much is thrown away. There are a lot of short, unusable strands in there! Take a close look at the hair that you are about to send off to me. You will see exactly what I mean.
Q. How should I collect it?
A. Using caution, please brush or comb your horse's tail (at least the part that you will be cutting). I suggest that you take hair from the underside of the tail, towards the base - because it is usually in better shape and will be long enough. Carefully cut the hair and bind the tail right away, with a rubber band at one end of the bunch. Do not band the tail hair in the middle. The band must be at one end. Also, please do not braid the hair!
Q. Should I wash the hair?
A. No. I will wash and treat it for you. I use a popular horse grooming item. I am not endorsed or sponsored by them, therefore I will not give them a "plug".
Q. How should I send it to you?
A. Please neatly tuck the hair in a plastic bag. It is essential that you do this neatly, or it could affect the tail. Write your name on the bag. Place it in an envelope, such as a manilla envelope, and mail it to me.
Q. Where do I send the tail hair?
A. You can send it to:
KMT/Angela
2106 Croghan Dr
Carnegie, PA 15106
Q. How long does the process take?
A. The braiding process takes at least 2 weeks after I have received your horse tail. Please keep this in mind when placing an order.
Q. Why does it take so long?
A. There are many steps involved in the process. From washing, treating, removing unwanted (short) hairs, counting hairs, gluing (capping off), and braiding. Most of these tasks cannot be done the same day.
Q. Can you mix tails together?
A. Yes!
Q. Do you make 3 strand, flat braided bracelets?
A. Yes, we do. Although, we primarily create 4 strand round braids (because we love the style), we are capable and very happy to accomodate you. Just submit your order as normal, then email us at info@knotmytail.com and let us know of your special request.
Q. Can I pay via check?
A. Sure. Please visit the order page and look for the Mail in Order form.
You will find a link to a prinitable order form. Or, click here.
Q. I want to order one for my friend as a gift. What should I do?
A. A good option in this case is to purchase a gift certificate.
Email me at: info@knotmytail.com to purchase one. As a gentle reminder....Please DO NOT cut the tail of anyone's horse, except for your own or without first receiving permission from the horse's owner.
Q. Help! The bracelet does not look like the tail that I sent!
A. It is... Do not worry!! You would be extremely surprised at how the colors blend together and appear when they are CLEAN and woven together. Sometimes, the pattern in the braid really brings out the darks, lights, tans, and greys that are not as eye catching as it is on your horse! Remember, you normally see your horses tail loose... and sometimes dirty...When it is braided together, the colors that appear all depend on how it was woven together.
Q. What do you do with the extra tail hair?
A. I sit outside most of the time when I am pulling hairs, and discard the unwanted ones on the ground. I either sweep them up and throw them out. Or, leave them for the birds to make nests out of.
Q. I do not like your options. Do you have any other clasps or charms available?
A. Just ask!! I will work with you and will do everything I can to find what you are looking for. For example, if you wish to have a toggle clasp, just email me at info@knotmytail.com. It is NO problem!
3. Caring for your Bracelet
Q. What should I do if I see a loose or stray hair?
A. It happens and is very normal...Sometimes a shorter hair will work its way loose. Please do not pull on it, as this may cause an issue with the integrity of the braid. Use fingernail clippers to VERY carefully snip JUST the stray hair.
Q. Can I wear it to swim, shower in, or get it wet?
A. No, we do not recommend that you get the bracelet wet or subject it to harsh chemicals or a harsh environment. Remember - it is hair and can/will stain if you subject it to dark liquids, i.e. wine, coffee, oils, etc. Please care for it, as you would care for any fine jewelry.
Q. Are these bracelets ok for kids?
A. No. Because these bracelets contain small parts, they are not recommended for kids. Please keep these bracelets away from children and pets (including cats and dogs), as they may present a hazard, such as a choking hazard. By placing an order, and reading this, you are now aware of that. We are not accountable, liable, or responsible for any injuries, accidents, deaths, or any other incident that may occur with/to any living creature, including, but not limited to: children, adults, dogs, cats, horses, or other pets/animals.
